Built-in Laptop Speakers not working [Dual boot, AMD]

Hi everyone,

First time poster (in any forum tbh), so go easy on me

But I think I got some starter info here. My speakers have not been working since installation a couple weeks ago, and I am again on my quest to fix it.

I have applied a lot of different potential "fixes" and commands, and I will try to list them below:

  • Tried unmuting in alsamixer
  • Tried adding this to etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
options snd-hda-intel dmic_detect=0
options snd-hda-intel model=laptop-amic enable=yes
  • Tried uninstalling Pulseaudio and only using Pipewire

Probably some more, here are some posts Ive tested without luck. Also tried some GPT without any luck.

Some outputs:

Thankful for any help here! Love Zorin but a bit hard sometimes without sound.

Welcome to the Forum!

Did You tried it with the PulseAudio Control Tool? It is a Tool to adjust Input and Output Sound. to install it, open the Terminal and type: sudo apt install pavucontrol and start it. Because it is about Your Speaker, You should take a Look at the Output Tab and the Configuration Tab.

Hi, thanks!

Yes, I have checked there. One odd thing is that it seems like my microphone is in playback. Some pictures below:

This HD-Audio Generic ... are these Your Speakers? If Yes, there stands that they are off. You should turn them on. Which of the 2 Pictures under that is for the HD-Audio Generic Option?

This one. I tired ProAudio and reboot, still no sound. I am actually not sure which one is my speakers..

Family 17h is as an output device but it seems to be moving when ever I make sounds into my microphone, which is weird.

I have seen this AMD Raven/Renoir Audio Processor pop up here on the forum more than once now, but have not found solutions here, or from wider websearch where it seems common issue.
I did find this today, albeit on Arch forum. [Solved]Amd renoir no audio, (snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave / Newbie Corner / Arch Linux Forums

Because there stand all over HDMI I would think no one is Your built-in Speakers. That should be the Putput over Your HDMI Plugs except this Pro Audio - whatever that is. Interestingly You have this Pro Audio on Your Family 17h Audio Controller, too.

Only a wild Idea: Did You take a Look in the Additional Drivers Tab in Software & Updates if there is maybe a Driver listed?

Hey thanks for checking. I tried both

options snd_hda_intel index=1
sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x20 0x500 0x1b
sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x20 0x477 0x4a4b
sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x20 0x500 0xf
sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x20 0x477 0x74

But none worked.

Yeah it's like its missing the built in speakers there.

I checked for additional drivers, but "No additional drivers available".

Just wondering, as this is a AMD component, if a later linux kernel would offer some hope, but guess that could lead to other breakages. Others here may have a better view on that.

Is this the first linux distro you have tried?

Looking back at your 3rd alsamixer screenshot for Card: "HD-Audio Generic".
Can you hit F5 to show "All" sound channels. (Maybe you post another screenshot in case we can see something and help)
Look for [Auto-Mute] channel, set that to "disable"
Look for [Loopback] channel, try that Enabled and Disabled to see if any effect.
In general, unmute all output channels, regardless of their labels.
If after playing around with alsamixer, you find setting that works, then use this to save alsamixer setting:

sudo alsactl store

Sound problems on linux can be frustrating and often illogical to diagnose, from my own experience.

Yes, that is my Impression, too. Did you had run Zorin in the Try Mode before you have installed it? And if yes: Did the Speakers worked?

Have You tried other Distros like Linux Mint or whatever and was there the Speakers working?

A bit lackluster here perhaps, but got it to work somehow.

I reinstalled Zorin, disabled pipewire, and upgraded to kernel 6.10.3. Maybe some bug in previous kernel? Not sure exactly what fixed it, but I am very happy. Thanks for the help guys.
